Things you can do right now, on your own

  • Breathe out for longer than you breathe in

In for four. Out for six. Some people do this a few times and notice their shoulders drop. If counting is too much right now, just breathe out slowly.

  • Name five things you can see

Then four you can hear, three you can touch, two you can smell, one you can taste. It does not matter if you lose count.

  • Cold water on your hands

Run your wrists under a cold tap, or hold something from the fridge. Some people find the change in temperature gives them something else to pay attention to.

  • Put both feet flat on the floor

Press down a little. Notice the floor pressing back. You do not have to do anything else for a minute.
