Using this
Short, because terms nobody reads protect nobody. This is what we do, what we ask of you, and what happens if either of us stops.
A lawyer has not reviewed this yet. When one does, this page will change and the date below will change with it. Until then it describes what the software does, which is the part we can promise is accurate.
What this is
A private place to write, on your own device. It is not a medical service, not therapy, and not a crisis service — if you need someone now, the help page lists people who can actually answer.
Who can use it
People aged 16 and over. We ask you at the start and we believe your answer, because checking properly would mean collecting identity documents — which would undo the thing this product is for.
Your writing is yours
We claim no rights over anything you write. Your journal we cannot read at all; nothing you write anywhere is used to train anything, and none of it is ever sold. You can take a copy whenever you like, and you can delete the account for good from Settings — nothing is destroyed for seven days, so changing your mind takes one tap.
Rooms, and what happens to what you post there
A room is a place other people read. Anything you post in one arrives here as plain words rather than as a locked block, under a name that belongs to you in that room and nowhere else. Your journal is separate and stays locked — posting is always a copy, and a deliberate one.
We can read what is posted in a room, and we will read it when somebody reports it. That is what makes the room possible to look after. Right now writing in the rooms is paused while the people and the checks that look after them are put in place, so you can read but not post.
We can take a post down if it breaks what a room is for, and you can take your own down whenever you want to — the control is on the screen that lists what you have posted. Either way, taking something down does not unsend it: whoever has already read it has read it, and we will not pretend otherwise. We also keep the words for a while afterwards rather than destroying them straight away, so that taking a post down cannot be a way around a report somebody has already made about it.
What we ask of you
Keep your phrase and your recovery key somewhere safe — they are the only way in, and we have no copy. Do not use this to store things that are illegal to possess. That is the whole list.
What we cannot guarantee
This is provided as it is, without a warranty that it will always be available or free of faults. We will not lose your writing carelessly — but the only copy that is certainly safe is the one you have exported.
If either of us stops
You can stop using this at any time, and you can take everything with you first. Erasing the account itself is a control in Settings under “Your account”: it starts a seven-day wait in which nothing is destroyed and one tap brings it back, and after that the keys are gone. If we stop, you get at least 90 days of notice and export works the whole time.
